Obama Campaign Releases First General Election Television Ad

60 Second Ad "Country I Love" to Air in 18 States (including Georgia)

The Obama campaign today announced the release of its first television advertisement for the general election.  The sixty second ad, entitled "Country I Love," will begin airing in eighteen states across the country tomorrow to highlight how our shared values have shaped Senator Obama's life.

In the spot, Senator Obama speaks to voters about the core values this nation was founded on and how they have guided him to work hard for his education, to bypass jobs on Wall Street to work as a community organizer, and to lead the fight for America's families and veterans as an Illinois and United States Senator.

The ad presents Senator Obama's record of passing laws to reform welfare, to cut taxes for working families, and to ensure America's veterans have the health care they deserve.

The ad will air in Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Virginia.

[EDITOR'S NOTE]:  Georgia's seeing some action!  Oh hell yeah!

50 state Strategy at work (2.00 / 1)

Some of those states would have been conceded early on other campaigns.

Re: 50 state Strategy at work (1.00 / 0)

I'm from georgia and a member of georgia democratic association in a certain large county.

I have stated in the past , we truly think GA is purple .  GA has a lot more students and over 1 million AA's that have not registered yet ( doing so drones) and or did not vote primaries..

I look forward to our next meeting to get some hard numbers..

Democrats!

By now you know we're having a fundraising breakfast this month and I'm sure you're aware of how important our breakfasts have been in recent election cycles.

Yes, it's true.  In 2004 John Kerry won in every North Fulton precinct we canvassed.  Why?  Because people like you were hungry enough for breakfast and change that you bought a ticket or two to our fund raisers, giving us the needed funds to print campaign literature to distribute door to door!

Yes, it's true.  In 2006 we were able to donate more than $1000 to each of our candidates running in North Fulton and we repeated our community outreach program from 2004.

Who knew bacon, eggs, sausage, bagels, yummy pastries and fresh-squeezed orange juice could make such a difference!

* Everyone Has Their Hand Out *

Listen, I don't like to see money play such a big role in politics any more than you do.  But the Republican party keeps upping the ante.  At least on our side, you know the money is being spent to benefit you, not the interests of big corporations.

For the bargain price of just $40 a ticket, you can come meet the candidates who you'll be voting for this November.  You can talk to them.  You can clarify their positions on issues.

Oh, and did I mention the bacon, eggs, sausage, bagels, yummy pastries and fresh-squeezed orange juice?

Re: 600,000 unregistered AA voters (per the (2.00 / 1)

I think GA keeps felons still on parole from registering--we had some trouble registering people around Lemon Street in Marietta when I worked an internship back in '02.  Check out this report from the Sentencing Project for more info on how felon disenfranchisement in Atlanta is affecting the electorate.

Re: 50 state Strategy at work (none / 0)

I thought the state was getting redder, unfortunately (see the trend of the past few elections.)

The party infrastructure that elected Southern Dems (for all their flaws) in the past and more recently Carter, Nunn, Cleland, before he became crazy Zell, etc. is dying off, and conservative yuppies are moving into the state, from the perception I'm getting.

It's a good ad, and I really like (2.00 / 2)

the way he finishes it: "I approve this message because. . ." It sounds less phony than the ads in which the candidate's voiceover just chimes in at the end with, "I'm so-and-so and I approve this message." Gracefully done.

Re: Obama Campaign Releases First General Election (none / 0)

What do you think?  Seems like a pretty nice ad.  I do kind of chuckle a bit that the minute the Democratic primary wraps up, it's time to put that flag pin back on!

Re: Obama Campaign Releases First General Election (none / 0)

And, of course, it's time to remind all those middle-Americans that Obama was raised by white people from Kansas. In fact, just about everyone in that ad is white. (remember how much crap Edwards got for that in his Iowa ad? This Obama supporter defended him, by the way, back then.).

It's a great ad, though, but one that has an obvious target.

Re: Obama Campaign Releases First General Election (none / 0)

He wore the pin off and on during the primary too.  The controversy wasn't even "Doesn't wear a flag pin" it was "doesn't ALWAYS wear a flag pin" which is double dumb cause almost no politicians do.

I hope it's clear that I was speaking metaphorically.

If someone were to design the perfect GE advertisement, it would probably be indistinguishable from a truck commercial.

Re: Obama Campaign Releases First General Election (none / 0)

Yeah its funny eh ?

When we were both saying it was a no brainer and he was going to flip on it during the primary , some of his supporters thought we were speaking another language .

I am glad he has it on now and the ad was great .

Once again the flag is not a " substitute for patriotism "  , it is a " symbol of patriotism ".

Put it on and leave it there permanently .

you don't want to be running for President and be having a philosophical decision on the meaning of the flag.

Some that are suggesting that they don't like the ad because he talks about patriotism are wrong.

Re: Obama Campaign Releases First General Election (2.00 / 1)

I love it! What a great intro to a candidate. It seems odd that an intro would still be needed but there are still lots of people who pay no attention to primaries and will start paying attention soon.

pretty good ad (none / 0)

I like how he emphasizes welfare-to-work, and I wonder how the Kos will react. I thought they hated DLC Clintonite Democrats. but welfare reform was Bill Clinton's most high profile achievement in terms of a single bill.

by Lakrosse on Thu Jun 19, 2008 at 12:30:35 PM EST

Re: pretty good ad (2.00 / 1)

Welfare-to-work is an idea codified in state and federal law with varying degrees of effectiveness/offensiveness.  Presumably he was talking about Illinois's version.

please, (none / 0)

its with obvious national implication in terms of context, in that he thinks reforming welfare, as a concept overall is a good idea. He said in his books he supported Bill Clinton's welfare reform bill

Move to the Center w/out Compromising (none / 0)

I like how he definitely makes reference to centrist values ("Accountability, Self-Reliance, and Love of Country, Working Hard without Making Excuses", and then slipping in "Treating your neighbor the way you'd like to be treated", which I see a liberal value) without trying to be Republican-lite.  There is something in the middle other than simply repeating less extreme version of GOP talking points.

He also slips in the "I have white connections too" card with his grandparents and more subtly with the reference to Steelworkers.  He will never win the true racists but there are some, especially older and working class, whites who have some residual misgivings about a black man in the WH that are vague enough that this kind of thing reassures them.

"Welfare to work", "Cut taxes for the working class" and "help wounded troops" are a little bit GOP-lite but they're completely compatible with central Democratic ideals of giving people a fair shot.

It's a good ad (none / 0)

Some random thoughts...

Here in PA the McCain intro ad (and now a new one) have been getting steady rotation but I haven't seen anything from Obama since the primary yet.

McCain's into ad is a decent introduction, but it doesn't really speak to political policy and results as well as the Obama ad, just talks about his war service and vague "experience" or whatever.

Obama managed to introduce himself and make a few of his accomplishments known.  Maybe it's an intentional contrast, all McCain talks about in the short bio of the ad is his military service and war...Obama doesn't even mention it.  Not to say he doesn't have policy on it, but that it doesn't define him.  If all McCain can think about it war, can we trust him to END this one?  Really, I think most people just want it to end at this point, they don't need more fairy tales about peaceful dream world Iraq.

This would mirror his rhetorical strategy about McCain's silly challenge to go to Iraq.  Obama turned it around by talking about the home front.

Re: Obama Campaign Releases (none / 0)

Great ad to kick off with. Needs to pound with this for a month to six weeks to clearly define him in the public mind. The personality area is really the only area where McCain is competitive with him. Having defined himself rather than let Charlie Black and Karl Rove do it then he can move onto the issues.
