Paterson tells Hil it's time

"I would say at this point we're starting to see a little desperation on the part of the woman who I support and I'll support until whatever time she makes a different determination," Paterson said, adding: "I thought she was the best candidate and I thought she had the best chance of winning."

Paterson, who is a DNC committee member and was present at the meeting when a vote was taken to penalize Florida and Michigan for moving their respective primaries ahead of the traditional starting contests in New Hampshire and Iowa, said he thought that decision was "a little unfair" and he "didn't agree with it at the time."

But he also noted "nobody was screaming" after that decision was made, although some people were unhappy with it, adding:

"There was a process. I thought at the time everybody agreed to it. I didn't hear any objections from the candidates...So I would think the Democratic National Committee would leave it where it is."

On Clinton's claims regarding the popular vote and likening the fight to set the Florida and Michigan delegates to the civil rights movement, Paterson said:

"You have to rule out the undecideds in Michigan. You have to assume she won 100 percent to nothing in Michigan. I don't think anybody in their right mind would do that, nor would they see it as a civil rights issue."

Well, he is right (2.00 / 1)

He is speaking like a concerned supporter and friend.  The best you could do for her in Michigan, if you were going to include those votes, is give her the votes she got and give Obama the uncommitted  votes.  If those voters voted that way when she was one of the very few on the ballot, then they ABSOLUTELY DID NOT WANT TO VOTE FOR HER and would feel they should be counted in the Hillary opposition.

by lombard on Thu May 22, 2008 at 07:45:50 PM EST

I actually totally buy that argument (none / 0)

Just want to point out that the voters who did vote for her ABSOLUTELY DID WANT TO VOTE FOR HER.

Of course (none / 0)

But some proposals have suggested that she get her votes and the uncommitted are not assigned.

Re: I actually totally buy that argument (none / 0)

Yes, but significant numbers of dems voted in the GOP primary because they couldn't vote for their preferred candidate.   They didn't want to vote for her either.  She won an a minority of all dems who voted in either primary.

Bah? (none / 0)

that sounds almost sensible.

j/k

I suspect the uncommitted delegates will end up in Obama's camp anyway, but I wonder if she'll complain about that as it will keep him ahead.

Re: Don't worry Temporary Governor (none / 0)

Don't you worry Gov. Paterson.

If Hillary does not end up as Obama's VP, she may just decide to run for Governor & take that seat from your ass.

Keep being cute Governor.

Bill & Hillary might decide to take your butt to the cleaners & take over being Governor.

Well done to Paterson. For speaking the truth.
The torch is being passed to Obama and there is no room anymore for drama and antics.

The door is closing on the Clintons.

Re: Paterson tells Hil it's time (2.00 / 1)

the door will never close on the Clintons. They made people like Barack Obama electable to the White House, or even close to it because he neutralized issues which had been used to landslide us from 1968-1988 like welfare, crime, and fiscal policy, which killed us in all of those elections. He turned many states, most which had been going red in the 5/6 elections before him into solid blue. Examples include CA, IL, NJ, ME, NH, MI, PA, DE, CT, and MD. We are no longer "soft on crime," or "welfare lovers" because of him. Before him, we averaged 111 electoral votes. Even in the two elections after him, we averaged 260, with less than charismatic candidates. The door will NEVER close on the Clintons, they are great Americans, great Democrats, and shall be honored for years to come. It will be Hillary's healthcare plan Obama signs.

Re: Paterson tells Hil it's time (2.00 / 0)

Yes, good point.  I am so sick of the Obama people trying to put the Clintons out to pasture because they think they have to for their candidate.  If Obama had lost the primary would the door be closing on him?  Of course not.  The Clintons have a fine future ahead of them and I am not worried one bit.

Re: Paterson tells Hil it's time (2.00 / 1)

Too bad Hillary didn't have the political smarts to get health care done a long time ago. Back then she called people who disagreed with her enemies and so didn't listen to their ideas and couldn't build a consensus for change. I see that she hasn't learned a lot since then.

Re: Paterson tells Hil it's time (none / 0)

what about the Dems who actually didn't back it from the get go? They undermined their President. They deserve blame for that. THEY are the ones who lacked political smarts. The reason they lost in 1994 was because the GOP "killed healthcare" as Bill Kristol told Bob Dole to do, and he did it. Kristol and Dole knew that if healthcare passed, the Dems would have middle class credentials for years to come. also, when did she call anyone back then "enemies?" Thats parroting Barack Obama when he was like "she, uhhhh didn't build a working majority" when the DEMS themselves, who had it, didn't act on it. They underminded their President, and themselves. Also, what about the lobbyists and big health care? They get no blame?

Re: Paterson tells Hil it's time (2.00 / 1)

I think one can be respectful of the good work the Clintons have done and simultaneously tell them, and the rest of us, that it's over.

Acknowledging that they're overreaching now does not mean that one cannot appreciate what they've done, or might do.

Re: Paterson tells Hil it's time (1.50 / 2)

Ironically, the "good" things that Bill did (mostly centrist positions) are aspects that Obama is now seeking to change.  Essentially, the DLC had its time and place and was definitely useful for a time.  But it's no longer useful.
