I too grew up in a very rural setting, and my family occasionally raised, slaughtered, and butchered our own livestock.
We were a pretty poor lot, and for a goodly portion of my childhood survived on what we could hunt and what sprouted from our garden. This with my college educated parents (father a public school teacher of government, social studies, and economics / mother a registered nurse).
To this day, I HATE both venison and beets. In any case, the photo of the cow doesn't depict cruelty, merely misortune. It's unfortunate, but my burger/steak joke would still be applicable wether or not the poor creature has it's head stuck or not. :)
